Microsft office starter 2010

I want to use the full version of Microsoft word that I installed but the computer always uses the microsoft word starter when I open files.  How can I fix this?  If I have to delete the starter program than will it effect the file I have already saved?

Answer
Deleting the Starter program won't hurt any files but there is no reason to do it.

Try, under the Start menu selecting the Run command.

In the box that pops up, paste the line that appears below and press Enter.
winword.exe /r

WORD .docx documents saved in "compatibility mode" on mac won't open on WORD 2010.

I batch converted all my .doc WORD documents to .docx on my home mac using automator. They open fine at home in "compatibility mode." The files are synced to my work computer with dropbox. On my work PC running Windows, when I try to open with WORD, I get a dialog box that says "the file extension does not match the file type," and the file won't open.

I found a couple of workarounds, but I need a better solution. The workarounds are (1) open the document on my mac and "convert" (from file menu) so it doesn't open in "compatibility mode" anymore.

On my work computer, the only thing I can do is manually change the extension to .doc., which allows me to open the document.

I need to make these documents accessible on my work computer. Since there are several thousand documents, it's too much work to open each one, convert, and save, using my mac. Automator for mac doesn't have any option on how to save the word document without "compatibility mode."

Answer
Compatibility mode simply means that the files are not saved in the native mode of the application. If the files will open normally when you change the filename to doc from docx, it suggests that the 'converter' has not saved them to docx format but has simply renamed them. You can easily confirm this by changing the filename from docx to zip and if you can then open the zip to reveal the XML structure, the file has been converted. If you can't then it has simply been renamed. That being the case you need to establish what the mac converter is actually doing and change it to do what you really require.

I may be mistaken, but thought that DOC format on the Mac was compatible with DOC format on the PC? In which case why bother converting? Open them as DOC on the PC.

How to find the Shrink to Fit Option in Word 2010

I am writing a document in Word 2010 and the document is just a few lines too long to fit onto one page. I am trying to use the Shrink to Fit to reduce the font size of the document to the point where the document fits on one less page than it would use. I cannot find this command in Word 2010. The Shrink to Fit command is available on Word 2002, 2003 and 2007, how do I find this command in Word 2010?

Answer
In Word 2010, Shrink to Fit command is known as Shrink One Page. It is not available on the ribbon or the quick access toolbar. However, you can customize the ribbon and add the command “Shrink One Page” to a new or existing group.

In Word 2010, you can add the Shrink to fit option by adding the Shrink One Page command to the Customize Ribbon.   To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Word.
  2. Click the File tab, click Options, and then click Customize Ribbon.
  3. In the Choose commands from drop-down list, select All Commands.
  4. Search for Shrink One Page, and then click it.
  5. Under Customize the ribbon, click the custom group where you want to add the command. The command can only be added to custom groups. To add a custom group, click the tab where you want the group to appear, and then click New Group.
  6. If you prefer to add the new group to a new tab, click the New Tab button which automatically creates a new group to put the command in.
  7. The new group is created at the end of the selected tab. You can change the new group name by clicking the Rename button.
  8. Click Add button, and then click OK.

My emails are stuck in the Outbox in Outlook 2010

My emails are stuck in the Outbox and I can't move or delete them!

Answer
If your email message contains a large attachment it can take a long time before it is sent or may even get “stuck” in the Outbox. To move or delete the email message you should use the Work Offline feature in Outlook before you attempt to move or delete the email.

Installing Office2010, Click-to-Run Application Manager - "Internet Connection Was Lost"

I'm attempting to install Office 2010 Home and Student on a new Windows 7 laptop with sufficient specs. I activated with the code from a no-disc single install booklet thing. The shortcuts are now available on my start-menu, but when clicked the Click-to-Run loading box just went on indefinitely. When run again, it suggested I repair in the control panel. I did that. Problem remains. When I'm in the control panel, the Click-to-Run Application Manager is now listed. When I click on that, a window entitled "Active Downloads" pops up and prompts me to resume my download of Office. When I click "resume all", I get a message from the notification area saying entitled "Internet Connection Was Lost" and instructing me to check my Internet connection.
I've tried it on wireless and ethernet, I'm not using a proxy, and I haven't had any other connection issues. I figured it might be a Windows Firewall issue but I can't find Office listed to make an exception.

It is the problem at Microsoft Office site. I check access to many site, gmail, yahoo and cnn. It was only Microsoft site that had problem.  I had same problem so I logon using my office account and download full installation version (2010 Home & Business). The download finished before the previous installaton finished! After finished, I tried to connect to my SkyDrive but it displayed the same error "Internet connection was lost". I restarted many time. My system was a fresh install.

I'm trying to activate my office2010 with my product key and it won't register.

I'm trying to activate my office2010 with my product key and it won't register. It takes the key and says that it's valid but never registers it.

Answer
From where did you obtain the product key? If you purchased Office on -line, uninstall the trial version of Office on your PC and install the version associated with the key that you have purchased.
If you have an Office 2007 trial still on the PC, uninstall that first.

Bought new laptop with Office2010 starter preinstalled, it's not allowing me to install my Office Small Business 2007

bought new laptop with Office2010 starter, it's not allowing me to install my Office Small Business 2007. After I insert disk & type product key...it says, "Locate earlier version of Microsoft office" and "setup can't find earlier version of Microsoft Office on your computer". I want use my Office Small Business2007 cause i am very used to it

Answer

You have a couple of problems.
First is that your 2007 is an upgrade license. When you installed it on the old machine you probably had Office 2003 or early on it.  To install it on the new computer you need to prove that you are "upgrading" from an older version. It does not have to be installed, apparently the installation process will allow you to point to installation disks for "qualifying" older applications. you will have to find one, somewhere.
I Need Installation files/CD for pre 2007 version of Office, What Can I Do
1.Find a friend (new or old) who has the right CD and is willing to lend you the CD. Unlike the very "old" DOS days when there was a signature file on the floppy, there is nothing unique on the CD to identify it. The uniqueness is provided via the Product key you use to activate it. So, you can borrow a CD without threatening their installation/activation.
2.Ask at work if they have an installation CD you can borrow
3.Try to find a local "PC Computer Club". There is almost certainly a geek or three with disks you could borrow.
4.Find a small local computer store or repair business. They often have old versions of software because they are still supporting customers using them.
5.You could buy it online. Be very careful who you give your money to
6.Try websites like Kijiji or Craig’s List to see if you can borrow or buy it
7.Try getting one from MS (if it works, please post back here, there are many interested people who would like to know that MS is still providing that kind of support) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246/
Once you get the installation file, make sure you burn a copy for yourself before returning the disk if it is borrowed.

Once you get the older version, before you start the install, as Gordon says, you should uninstall the factory pre-installed Office Trial that almost certainly came with your computer. Trying to activate an installed copy of office with the trial still there will probably cause problems.

You do not HAVE to uninstall Office 2010 Starter. It is not actually "installed" on your computer in the traditional sense. It is running in a "virtual machine", which isolates it from actual installations on your computer. The one conflicting interaction you would have is with default file associations. Which application Windows opens when you double click on a file.  Windows seems to be somewhat reluctant to release file associations from Starter to installed versions. But you can get around that.

If you decide to uninstall starter, there is one thing you should consider. Starter has one unique attribute. It can be used to create a "portable" copy of itself on USB thumb drives so that you can run it on windows computers that do not have Office installed.
